Inside the problem

How it works

Joints such as the knee have cartilage and ligaments that adapt to the load we put through them. Illustration: Gray's Anatomy (public domain).

Arthritis is the umbrella word for joint pain and stiffness, and osteoarthritis is the most common type. Joints adapt to load, so staying active and strong usually helps rather than harms. Exercise is the cornerstone of managing osteoarthritis, along with pacing, weight management and, when needed, medical care.

In more detail

Common problems explained

What each one is, what it feels like and how we manage it.

Osteoarthritis of the knee

Stiffness after rest, aching with activity and sometimes swelling. A strengthening and walking program is first-line treatment. We help you pace activities and plan around flare-ups.

Osteoarthritis of the hip

Groin or thigh ache and stiffness, especially getting up from a chair. Strengthening, movement and hydrotherapy help many people stay active and independent.

Hand and thumb arthritis

Pain, stiffness and sometimes swelling at the base of the thumb or finger joints. We use joint protection strategies, splinting where useful, and strengthening.

Spinal and shoulder arthritis

Neck, back or shoulder stiffness that eases as you move. Hands-on treatment, movement and strengthening keep you moving, and we advise you when a medical review is worthwhile.

How we help

Our four-step approach

Every plan is built around your problem, your work and your goals.

1

Assess

We assess which joints are involved, how you move, and what you want to be able to do.

2

Explain

You'll understand your condition and why movement helps rather than harms.

3

Treat

Hands-on treatment to ease stiffness, and exercises to keep joints moving.

4

Rebuild

A strengthening plan, in the gym, at home or in our heated pool, that you can keep doing.

Hydrotherapy and our physio-led Pilates classes are good options to keep going between visits.

When to see a doctor first. See a doctor promptly if a joint becomes suddenly hot, red and swollen, you have fever with joint pain, or you cannot take weight on a painful joint.

Questions

Before you book

Is exercise safe with arthritis?

Yes. Appropriate exercise is one of the best-supported ways to manage arthritis. Your physio will set the level for you.

Can I use the pool?

Yes. Our heated hydrotherapy pool takes load off sore joints while you build strength.

Can I claim on Medicare?

If your GP has given you a chronic disease management plan you can claim a rebate for allied health visits. Bring your referral to your first visit.

What happens at the first appointment?

Initial appointments are 60 minutes, so there is time for a thorough assessment. We assess the problem, explain what is going on, start treatment and give you a clear plan. No referral needed.

Can I claim on my health fund?

Yes. If your extras cover includes physio, you can claim on the spot with HICAPS and only pay the gap. We also see Medicare care plan, WorkCover, CTP, DVA and NDIS patients.
