Your first visit

What happens on the day

Your first visit is about finding out what is really going on, not just where it hurts. We take time to listen, examine how you move, and explain what we find in plain English, so you understand your problem and what will help. Most people start treatment on the day and leave with a clear plan.

In more detail

Common first-visit questions

Quick answers before you book.

Do I need to prepare anything?

Not really. Wear something comfortable you can move in, bring your health fund card and any scans or reports, and think about what you most want to get back to doing.

Will treatment hurt?

Treatment should be comfortable. Tell your physio about anything that is too sore, and they will adjust. Some techniques can be uncomfortable for a moment, and we explain them first.

How many visits will I need?

It depends on your problem and your goals. We give you an honest idea at your first visit and check progress as we go.

Can I bring someone with me?

Yes, a family member or friend is welcome if it helps you feel comfortable.

How we help

Your first visit

What happens, step by step.

1

Your story

We ask about your problem, your health and what you want to get back to doing.

2

Your assessment

We check how you move and find out what is driving your symptoms, then explain it in plain English.

3

Your treatment

We start treatment at your first visit, so you leave having made a start.

4

Your plan

You leave with a clear plan, including what to do at home and when we'd like to see you next.

Before you come. If you are unwell, or have severe pain after an injury, numbness, weakness that is getting worse, or chest pain, see a doctor or go to emergency before your appointment.

Questions

Before you book

How long is the first appointment?

Your first appointment is 60 minutes, so there is time for a thorough assessment and to start treatment.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can book directly. If you've seen a GP or specialist, bring any letters, scans or reports along.

Can I claim on my health fund?

Yes. If your extras cover includes physio, you can claim on the spot with HICAPS and only pay the gap.

Can I see a female or male physio?

Yes. Just let us know which you prefer when you book.

What if I'm funded by WorkCover, CTP, DVA or NDIS?

Let us know when you book and bring your claim number or referral. You can read how funded care works at Focus on our funded physio page.
